Mushfiqur Rahim Bids Farewell to ODIs with a Guard of Honor
Spanning nearly two decades, Mushfiqur Rahim’s career has been filled with remarkable achievements. He will undoubtedly be remembered as one of Bangladesh’s finest ODI batsmen. However, yesterday, he officially announced his retirement from the format on social media, just as he previously did with T20 cricket.
In Bangladeshi cricket, on-field retirements are rare, and Mushfiqur was no exception. Yet, the farewell moment became more special today at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Playing for Mohammedan in the Dhaka Premier League match against Rupganj Tigers, Mushfiqur stepped onto the field one last time in ODIs. Mohammedan won the toss and chose to field, allowing him a final moment of recognition.
As he walked in with his pads and gloves, Mushfiqur was honored by his teammates, who lined up in two rows to give him a guard of honor. Among them were some of his longtime national teammates—Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, and Mehedi Hasan Miraz—who also play for Mohammedan and stood by his side during this special moment.
Mushfiqur Rahim leaves behind a remarkable ODI legacy. Having played a record 274 matches for Bangladesh, he is the country’s second-highest run-scorer in this format after Tamim Iqbal, amassing 7,795 runs at an average of 36.42. His tally of nine centuries places him just behind Tamim’s 14. With his departure, Bangladesh bids farewell to one of its most accomplished and consistent cricketers.
