Messi Scores Twice As Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay Secure World Cup Berths
Messi found the net in the 39th and 80th minutes to lead a 3-0 home victory over Venezuela.

Lionel Messi scored twice for Argentina in an emotional night in Buenos Aires on Thursday, as Uruguay, Colombia, and Paraguay also booked their places at next year’s World Cup.
Although Argentina had already secured qualification, Messi struck in the 39th and 80th minutes to seal a 3-0 home win over Venezuela. Playing in his final home qualifier, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner dazzled before 80,000 fans at the Mas Monumental Stadium.
Messi, who will turn 39 during the 2026 tournament in North America, appears set to remain central to Lionel Scaloni’s plans as Argentina defend their title. Before kickoff, he was joined on the field by his three sons, while his father Jorge watched from the stands.
Elsewhere, Uruguay clinched their spot with a 3-0 victory over Peru in Montevideo, Colombia overcame Bolivia by the same scoreline, and Paraguay secured qualification after a goalless home draw against Ecuador. Brazil had already sealed their place.
Bielsa’s Uruguay March On
In front of 60,000 fans at Estadio Centenario, Rodrigo Aguirre opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a towering header. Uruguay, needing only a point to qualify, ensured Marcelo Bielsa will lead a team to the World Cup for the third time in his storied career.
Despite a qualification campaign that has tempered some of the early excitement around Bielsa’s 2023 appointment, Uruguay celebrated in style. Giorgian de Arrascaeta doubled the lead just before the hour mark, before Federico Viñas made it three late on.
Colombia and Paraguay Seal Their Places
Colombia eased through with goals from James Rodríguez, Jhon Córdoba, and Juan Fernando Quintero to down Bolivia 3-0.
Paraguay, needing only a draw, held Ecuador 0-0 to book their ninth World Cup appearance — and their first since 2010.
Venezuela, currently in seventh place, still have one qualifier remaining as they aim for a playoff berth.
