The UN Resident Coordinator has reiterated the organization’s commitment to providing continued support to the Election Commission

United Nations Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis on Thursday reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to assisting the Election Commission ahead of the national polls set for February.

“The UN fully supports the February general election, which is vital for the country’s democratic transition,” Lewis said during a meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna.

According to a press release from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, their talks touched on Bangladesh’s development priorities and reform agenda.

They also discussed ways the UN could contribute to ensuring a transparent, free, fair, and peaceful election, as well as strategies for expanding UN support to advance the government’s reform efforts aimed at addressing major challenges and promoting sustainable growth.

Preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York and the Rohingya conference later this month were also reviewed.

Both leaders voiced serious concern over the steep drop in international aid for Rohingya humanitarian needs, which is already disrupting vital services such as education in refugee camps.

Chief Adviser Yunus underscored the urgent necessity of continued global solidarity and increased support to fill the funding gap and bolster Bangladesh’s humanitarian response for the Rohingya.

Lewis, in turn, reiterated the UN’s strong support for Bangladesh’s reform and transition process, affirming the organisation’s dedication to helping the country secure long-term stability and sustainable development.
