PM inaugurates Tk4,068 crore Mongla Port modernisation project

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday laid the foundation stone of a Tk4,068 crore project to construct two container jetties and develop supporting infrastructure at Mongla Port, aiming to boost its cargo-handling capacity and modernise port operations.

He inaugurated the project at a ceremony in Mongla, Bagerhat, at 11:15am, according to PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony. The project includes the construction of two container jetties and associated facilities to expand the port’s handling capacity and improve service efficiency.

Earlier, the Prime Minister arrived at Mongla Port at 9:50am on a daylong official visit to Bagerhat and Khulna. During his visit, he attended the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on economic and infrastructure cooperation between Invest Bangladesh and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), a Chinese state-owned enterprise.

Invest Bangladesh Member (Industrial Zones) Saleh Ahmed and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Chairman Li Chongyang signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

Under the MoU, the two sides will explore investment opportunities in several key sectors, including energy, industrial infrastructure, environmentally friendly infrastructure, transport, logistics and human resource development.

Following the signing ceremony, Tarique Rahman also held an exchange of views with a high-level Chinese delegation led by CRCC Chairman Dai Hegen.

After completing his engagements in Mongla, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel by road to Bagerhat town to visit the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R).

He will then leave for Khulna at 1:15pm, with a brief stop at Khulna Circuit House at 2:15pm.

In Khulna, he is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of Notun Kuri Sports (Season-2) at Khulna District Stadium at 3pm. He will depart for Dhaka by helicopter at 4:30pm and is expected to arrive at Tejgaon Airport at 5:15pm.
