ICC partners with global business coalition to promote ocean sustainability
This initiative underscores the profound interdependence between terrestrial and marine environments.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has joined a coalition comprising over 80 businesses and organisations from 25 countries in issuing a Business Call to Action ahead of the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France. According to a press release, the joint statement—endorsed by companies with a combined turnover exceeding €600 billion and employing more than 2 million people—urges stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to conserve and sustainably manage ocean resources.
The initiative emphasises the intrinsic link between land and sea, highlighting the crucial role healthy coastal and marine ecosystems play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Businesses are encouraged to support ocean science, minimise environmental harm, integrate ocean health into climate strategies, and invest in sustainable blue economy initiatives. Simultaneously, the statement calls on policymakers to adopt ambitious, science-driven policies, enforce international agreements, and acknowledge the interconnected nature of the ocean, climate, and biodiversity.
Key recommendations include increasing investment in marine research, strengthening science-policy collaboration, facilitating adaptation to sea-level rise, and creating innovative financing mechanisms to support ocean sustainability.
The Business Call to Action is spearheaded by leading international organisations such as the ICC, United Nations Global Compact, World Economic Forum, We Mean Business Coalition, Business for Nature, Mouvement des Entreprises de France, UN Global Compact Network France, and the Association française des Entreprises pour l'Environnement.
