Govt Firm in Its Commitment to Ensure Judicial Independence: CA

Highlighting the measures undertaken to reform the judiciary, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reaffirmed the interim government’s firm commitment to establishing an independent and efficient judiciary.

“We are resolutely dedicated to achieving a judiciary that operates independently and efficiently, and we are eager to see this vision fully realized,” he said while addressing the National Seminar on Judicial Independence and Efficiency held at the InterContinental Hotel.

The Chief Adviser stressed that the success of these reforms depends on the collective efforts of all involved.

The seminar, presided over by Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, was also addressed by Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, and Bangladesh Bar Council Vice Chairman Zainul Abedin.

Speaking as the chief guest, Prof Yunus recalled the significance of the July revolution, describing it as a symbol of the nation’s united stand against injustice.

He noted the sacrifices made during the uprising, stating, “Many lives were lost, and thousands were injured during the July movement. We still have a long journey ahead to honor those sacrifices and fulfill the promises made.”

Referring to the ongoing reforms, the Chief Adviser said their full implementation would usher in a ‘new dawn’ for Bangladesh, reflecting the aspirations of its people.

“Rather than dwelling on past challenges, let us move forward with determination to fulfill the dreams of our martyrs by building a society rooted in equality, dignity, and freedom,” he urged.

Prof Yunus emphasized that an independent and efficient judiciary is central to achieving these goals.

He noted that steps have been initiated to formulate rules governing judicial transfers and to protect the district judiciary from executive and political interference.

The Chief Adviser described the proposal to create a separate judicial secretariat as indispensable. “The establishment of a separate Secretariat would provide the judiciary with the structural autonomy it needs to function without external pressure,” he stated.

Prof Yunus also highlighted the activation of the Supreme Judicial Council, which ensures both judicial accountability and independence as part of the broader reform efforts.

Expressing gratitude to Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed for his leadership, Prof Yunus praised his efforts in consulting stakeholders across the country, fostering a broad consensus and strong sense of ownership among judicial officers and others involved.

He further acknowledged the Supreme Court’s key role in drafting legislation and appointing judges to the highest court.

Prof Yunus concluded by expressing sincere appreciation for international support in advancing the reforms. “We are deeply grateful for the generous assistance extended by the European Union, the UK, UNDP, Sweden, and our international partners,” he said.
