The Election Commission (EC) will decide whether teachers of private educational institutions receiving Monthly Pay Order (MPO) benefits will be eligible to contest local government elections, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam said on Sunday.

“The Election Commission frames election rules and determines the eligibility of candidates. The EC will now review the relevant laws and policies of the Ministry of Education and decide whether MPO-listed teachers can contest the elections,” he said.

The state minister made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a courtesy meeting between Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli and LGRD and Co-operatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan at the Secretariat.

He also said there is no age limit for candidates in local government elections.

His comments came amid the EC’s recommendations to amend local government laws, including a proposed provision to prevent MPO-listed teachers from contesting local polls.

The proposed restriction has faced opposition from several political parties.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami recently called on the EC to withdraw the proposed provision barring MPO-listed teachers from participating in local government elections.
