Government Employees Resume Protests, Demand Repeal of Controversial Ordinance
Government employees resumed their protest at the Secretariat on Monday, calling for the immediate repeal of the recently issued Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
Following a 10-day Eid holiday, staff from various departments gathered at the Secretariat around 10:30 am and staged demonstrations.
Protesters alleged that although a review committee headed by the Law Adviser was formed to examine the ordinance, it has yet to engage in any dialogue with the protesting bodies.
Md. Nazrul Islam, co-secretary general of the Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum, announced the protest plan on Sunday. He said the forum would submit memoranda to the advisers of the Home Affairs, Social Welfare, and Housing and Public Works ministries. Leaders also plan to announce a new course of action.
The ordinance, promulgated on 25 May, allows for the termination of public servants without departmental proceedings in four specific disciplinary cases, requiring only a show-cause notice. The draft had received initial approval at the Advisory Council meeting on 22 May.
Since 24 May, all unions representing government officers and staff at the Secretariat have jointly protested the ordinance, denouncing it as “repressive and undemocratic.”
