Death Toll Rises to 32 in Milestone Jet Crash as Another Child Dies
Another child has died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS), pushing the death toll from Monday’s tragic fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in the capital’s Uttara to 32.
The latest victim, 10-year-old Ayman, succumbed to his injuries at the Female High Dependency Unit (FHDU) of the burn institute around 9:30 am on Friday. Ayman, a fourth-grade student at Milestone School, had suffered 45% burns, according to Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, Residential Surgeon at NIBPS.
With Ayman’s death, a total of 14 victims have died at NIBPS and one at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
As of 10:00 am Friday, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed that 51 people injured in the crash are still receiving treatment at various hospitals across the capital. Among them, 41—including seven in critical condition—are being treated at the burn institute. Treatment is being administered in consultation with foreign medical teams.
The identities of two of the 32 deceased remain unconfirmed. The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) DNA Forensic Lab is working to identify them through DNA analysis. On Thursday, CID identified five female children after testing 11 DNA samples.
The death toll rose steadily over the past two days, with 15-year-old Mahia passing away around 4:30 pm on Thursday, and 12-year-old Mahatab dying earlier that afternoon at 1:50 pm—both at NIBPS.
The deadly incident occurred on Monday, July 21, when a Bangladesh Air Force FT-7 fighter jet crashed into a two-storey building on the Milestone School and College campus shortly after 1:00 pm, reportedly due to a mechanical failure. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam, also perished in the crash.
