Buttler set to step down as England's limited-overs captain
Under Buttler's captaincy, England was unable to defend their T20 and 50-over World Cup titles

England captain Jos Buttler announced on Friday that he will step down as the team's limited-overs skipper following a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign, where England failed to reach the semi-finals.
“I’m stepping down as England captain; it’s the right decision for both myself and the team,” the 34-year-old stated during a press conference.
During Buttler’s tenure, England was unable to defend either their T20 or 50-over World Cup titles.
However, he confirmed his intention to continue playing for England, expressing his eagerness to “get back to truly enjoying my cricket.”
“The dominant emotions right now are sadness and disappointment,” he admitted. “With time, that will fade, and I’ll be able to fully appreciate the immense honor of captaining my country and all the special moments that came with it.”
Buttler took over from Eoin Morgan in June 2022 and led England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year in Australia. However, England’s performance has declined since, with three consecutive ICC tournament failures—the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy—ultimately prompting his resignation.
Following England’s narrow eight-run defeat to Afghanistan on Wednesday—their ninth loss in 10 white-ball matches this year—Buttler had hinted at stepping down, stating he needed to “consider all possibilities” and assess whether he was “part of the problem or part of the solution.”
