TIB raises concerns over the exclusion of indigenous graffiti from textbooks
TIB called for accountability from NCTB and emphasized the need for clarity regarding indigenous rights and identity.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has voiced serious concern over the National Curriculum and Textbook Board's (NCTB) decision to remove graffiti featuring the word “Adivasi” (indigenous) from the back cover of ninth and tenth-grade textbooks.
In a statement released on Friday, TIB criticized the NCTB, accusing it of aligning itself with authoritarianism and acting as a "rehabilitation center" for such tendencies. TIB condemned the decision and the subsequent attacks on indigenous people who peacefully protested against it, calling these actions a betrayal of the student-people movement's spirit and the vision of a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
The anti-corruption organization urged accountability for the NCTB and called for reforms to rid the institution of any alliances with authoritarian forces.
TIB also described the government's Thursday statement as timely and urged further clarification of its stance on ensuring equal rights, dignity, and the recognition of indigenous identity in Bangladesh.
