Following the dismissal of 252 trainee sub-inspectors (SIs) at the Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah, Rajshahi due to disciplinary violations, the academy has issued show-cause notices to an additional 59 SIs in two phases. These notices, served on Monday and Thursday, cite incidents of disorderly behavior in training classes, where specific trainees reportedly disrupted sessions by sitting haphazardly and creating a commotion. The letters, signed by Superintendent of Police (Admin and Logistics) Tarek Bin Rashid on behalf of the Police Academy Principal, notified ten SIs on Monday, with an additional 49 receiving notices on Thursday. The academy has yet to make an official statement, though sources confirm the incident, heightening concern among the notified trainees about possible dismissal.
The dismissed 252 SIs and the trainees under scrutiny were part of the 40th Cadet SI Batch, comprising 823 recruits selected under the Awami League government in 2023, with their training scheduled to conclude next month. Notices issued Thursday to 49 trainees detailed a specific incident on October 21, where instructors observed disorderly seating and disruptive conduct in a session on legal provisions in Chamney Memorial Hall. The notice mentioned that Inspector Rezaul Karim reported the incident, calling for disciplinary action, and directed recipients to submit a written explanation within three days, citing a potential violation of Bangladesh Police Academy regulations.
This follows similar notices given to ten SIs for disruptive conduct in a gymnasium class on October 16. Attempts to reach Police Academy Principal (Additional IGP) Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan and Superintendent Tarek Bin Rashid for comments were unsuccessful, and Enamul Haque Sagar, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Media and Public Relations, confirmed the prior dismissal of 252 SIs but could not verify the current show-cause notices.
Expressing frustration, one trainee insisted that recruitment issues should be investigated rather than targeting trainees unfairly, noting, “I was selected based purely on merit; why am I being treated this way?” Another trainee, fearing potential dismissal, shared concerns about the extensive training since November 4, 2023, adding, “With so many dismissed already, those remaining are filled with uncertainty, hearing that the dismissal list may grow even longer.”
