Prices remain elevated as the government struggles to control extortion and hoarding, says CPD
The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) states that the interim government has not taken meaningful action to tackle irregularities like extortion, hoarding, and irrational price-fixing of essential commodities, despite persistently high inflation.

CPD Executive Director Fahmida Khatun expressed disappointment, stating, "It is regrettable that the interim government's efforts have so far failed to reduce the prices of essential commodities." She made the remarks during a briefing at the think tank's office on Tuesday, where CPD presented its assessment of Bangladesh's economy for the fiscal year 2024-25.
While CPD acknowledged government initiatives, such as selling key commodities through agencies like the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh to ease consumer pressure amid high inflation, it criticized the lack of effective measures to address the systemic issues driving price hikes.
Inflation in Bangladesh has remained above 9 percent since March 2023. In its report, CPD highlighted that the persistent rise in essential food prices and inflation continues to pose significant challenges, with food inflation being a key driver of overall inflation, further straining household finances.
