The Nil Sagar Express, carrying thousands of passengers, has derailed in Santahar
Train services between Dhaka and the northern regions of the country have been suspended following the incident.
At least nine coaches of the Nil Sagar Express derailed in Santahar on Wednesday afternoon, disrupting rail communication between Dhaka and the northern region.
The accident took place around 2:30pm at Tilakpur, between Santahar and Adamdighi, as the train was heading towards Nilphamari.
Sub-Inspector of Santahar Railway Police, Mahfuzur Rahman, said the train had departed Dhaka and reached Santahar station at about 2pm. “Shortly after leaving the station, it derailed, with nine coaches going off the tracks,” he said.
He added that rescue operations are currently underway to retrieve the derailed coaches.
Officer-in-Charge of Adamdighi Police Station, Ataur Rahman, said reports of multiple casualties have been received, though the exact number has yet to be confirmed.
Train services between Dhaka and the northern parts of the country remain suspended following the incident.
