A Bangladesh-led resolution on sustainable bioeconomy has been adopted at the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), which concluded on Friday in Bangkok.

The landmark resolution was steered by Bangladesh under the leadership of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam.

According to a message received on Saturday, the achievement underscores Bangladesh’s growing role in shaping the regional development agenda.

Titled “Supporting the Transition towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Asia and the Pacific,” the resolution was adopted unanimously by member states, reflecting strong regional recognition of Bangladesh’s diplomatic engagement.

Aligned with Bangladesh’s national priorities, the resolution focuses on advancing sustainable, innovation-driven and inclusive growth. It highlights economic transformation through a circular economy, efficient resource use, and the application of science and technology.

It also calls for enhanced regional cooperation across Asia and the Pacific to facilitate knowledge sharing, capacity building, investment mobilisation, and the development of sustainable bioeconomy value chains.

Addressing the session, Faqir Mahbub Anam said the bioeconomy is not merely a new concept but a practical pathway to tackle climate challenges, strengthen resilience, and promote inclusive growth.

The initiative was co-sponsored by several countries, including India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Armenia and Kazakhstan, signalling broad regional consensus on sustainable development.

The session also adopted the Baku-Bangkok Declaration on “Strengthening Social Development to Build Inclusive Societies for All Ages,” reaffirming the region’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable social progress.
