Mahmudul Hasan Joy, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Mushfiqur Rahim have worked diligently to help Bangladesh recover in the Mirpur Test after losing early wickets in their second innings.

Day 2 started on a sour note for the Tigers, with Kyle Verreynne's century (114) and solid contributions from Wiaan Mulder (54) and Dane Piedt (32) giving South Africa a commanding 202-run lead on Tuesday.

Bangladesh's second innings also got off to a rocky start, as seamer Kagiso Rabada (2-10) took two wickets in the third over, dismissing Shadman Islam (1) and Mominul Haque (0). However, Joy (38*) and Shanto (23) steadied the innings with a 55-run partnership before the Bangladeshi captain was adjudged lbw by Keshav Maharaj.

Veteran Mushfiq stepped up as a capable replacement, finishing the day unbeaten on 31 off 26 balls, including four boundaries, before low light halted play. In the process, Mushfiq, Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket, surpassed the 6,000-run mark in the format.

Trailing by 101 runs, the Tigers will look to build on the partnership between Joy and Mushfiq to set a competitive target for the visitors when play resumes.
