US President Donald Trump said he had struck "fantastic trade deals" with Chinese President Xi Jinping as the two leaders met on Friday for the final round of talks at a high-stakes summit in Beijing, which Trump said had also produced a Chinese offer to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump arrived in Beijing aiming to secure agreements in sectors such as agriculture, aviation and artificial intelligence, while also addressing tensions between Washington and Beijing over several geopolitical issues, including the conflict in the Middle East.

The US president praised Xi as a “great leader” and “friend”, although the Chinese leader’s response remained comparatively restrained.

Still, Trump said the visit had yielded significant progress.

“We’ve made some fantastic trade deals, great for both countries,” he said after strolling with Xi through the rose gardens of Zhongnanhai, the central leadership compound beside Beijing’s Forbidden City.

“We’ve settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn’t have been able to solve,” he added, without elaborating.

Xi described the trip as a “milestone visit” and said the two countries had built “a new bilateral relationship” based on “constructive strategic stability”. He also promised to send seeds for the White House Rose Garden to Trump.

Speaking to Fox News after the summit’s opening day, Trump said Xi had agreed to several US requests.

Discussing the Iran conflict, Trump said Xi assured him that China would not provide military assistance to Tehran, which has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz.

“He said he’s not going to give military equipment... he said that strongly,” Trump told Fox News.

Trump added that Xi expressed support for reopening the strategic waterway, saying: “If I can be of any help whatsoever, I would like to help.”

China’s foreign ministry later called for “a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire” and urged that shipping routes be reopened “as soon as possible” in line with international demands.

Despite the cordial atmosphere, the summit was overshadowed by longstanding tensions over Taiwan.

Chinese state media reported that Xi warned Trump early in the talks that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead the two nations into “conflict”. Trump did not publicly address the issue, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the president would comment further in the coming days.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington’s position on Taiwan “remains unchanged”, adding that although Beijing raised the matter, the two sides moved on to other topics after reiterating their positions. Taiwan later thanked the United States for reaffirming its support.

Trump did not specify the trade deals reached with China, but told Fox News that Xi had agreed to purchase “200 big” Boeing aircraft. The remarks nevertheless failed to impress investors, with shares of Boeing falling amid expectations of a larger order.

Trump also said China expressed interest in buying more US oil and soybeans. Beijing had reduced imports of both products following tariffs imposed by Trump last year, turning instead to alternative suppliers such as Brazil for soybeans and Iran for oil.

Meanwhile, Bessent said the two leaders had discussed establishing “guardrails” for artificial intelligence cooperation, describing the United States and China as the world’s “two AI superpowers”, even as US export restrictions on advanced AI technology remain a major source of friction between the two countries.
