Survey Finds 53% of Americans Hold Unfavourable View of Israel

A recent Pew Research Center survey highlights a notable shift in American sentiment toward Israel, with 53% of U.S. adults now holding an unfavourable view—up from 42% in March 2022. This represents the highest disapproval rate in recent years, driven by increasing concerns over Israel’s actions in Gaza and its role in the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
The survey, conducted from March 24 to 30, precedes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming U.S. visit. Traditionally supported across party lines, Israel now faces growing criticism—especially among younger Americans and Democrats. Nearly 70% of Democrats express unfavourable opinions, compared to 37% of Republicans. Among younger Republicans (under 50), views are almost evenly divided, contrasting with the more positive outlook seen in 2022.
The survey also shows overwhelming negative sentiment among Muslim Americans (81%) and religiously unaffiliated individuals (69%). Netanyahu’s leadership fares poorly, with only 32% expressing confidence in him on world affairs, while 52% lack confidence—rising to 87% among Muslim Americans. Jewish Americans are split: 53% lack confidence in Netanyahu, 45% support him.
Public interest in the Israel-Hamas conflict is also waning. Just 54% of Americans say the issue is personally important, down from 65% in January. Similarly, 66% now view the conflict as significant to U.S. national interests—down from 75% in 2023.
Regarding President Trump’s role, 31% believe he favours Israelis too heavily, while 29% think he strikes the right balance. Muslim Americans are especially critical, with 70% asserting that he favours Israel excessively.
Trump’s controversial idea that the U.S. should take control of Gaza finds little public support—62% oppose it, including nearly half who “strongly oppose.” Only 15% support the notion.
Support for a peaceful two-state solution has also declined, with only 46% of Americans believing peaceful coexistence between Israel and a Palestinian state is possible—down from 52% in late 2023. Optimism is highest among younger adults and Democrats.
