China Retaliates, Increases Tariffs on US Goods to 125%

Beijing on Friday announced an increase in tariffs on US imports to 125%, in retaliation to President Donald Trump’s recent move to raise duties on Chinese goods to 145%. This development significantly heightens the ongoing trade conflict, posing serious risks to global supply chains. The tariff hike follows the White House’s decision to intensify pressure on China—the world’s second-largest economy and a major source of US imports—by imposing additional duties specifically on Chinese products, while suspending most of the reciprocal tariffs previously levied on other countries. In response, China’s Finance Ministry issued a statement condemning the US measures, stating that the imposition of such excessively high tariffs violates international trade regulations, disregards basic economic principles, and constitutes unilateral bullying and coercion.
