India thwarted a planned Pakistani offensive on the night of May 9–10 by launching BrahMos missile strikes, a fact publicly acknowledged by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Speaking at an event in Azerbaijan, Sharif revealed that the Pakistani military had prepared to strike India early in the morning, shortly after Fajr prayers. However, before their operation could commence, several regions in Pakistan, including Rawalpindi airport, were hit by Indian BrahMos missiles.

This escalation followed the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terror-linked sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes reportedly killed over 100 terrorists and demolished key militant infrastructure.

The operation triggered four days of intense clashes involving drones, missiles, and long-range artillery, raising fears of a broader conflict. On May 10, India retaliated against Pakistani strikes by hitting eight Pakistani airbases, including the strategic Murid and Nur Khan facilities. The Indian Air Force targeted runways, hangars, radar stations, missile sites, and weapons depots. Later that day, both nations reportedly agreed to cease hostilities.
