NATO chief praises Trump’s efforts to bring an end to the fighting in Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday applauded US President Donald Trump’s efforts to push for an end to the war in Ukraine, the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.
“There is significant renewed momentum in the peace process, and for that I want to commend President Trump,” Rutte told reporters during a visit to Iceland, where he met Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir.
A new US-backed ceasefire proposal has revived diplomatic talks, with officials from Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and Europe working through the details in negotiations held from Geneva to Abu Dhabi.
Washington has yet to release the latest plan publicly, but Trump has described it as a “fine-tuned” revision of a previous 28-point proposal that Kyiv and several European partners dismissed as overly accommodating to Moscow.
The Kremlin has said it views parts of the updated proposal “positively,” while noting that other elements still need further discussion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said the “principles” of the plan could pave the way for “more substantive agreements.”
US special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow next week for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
