The Advisory Council, in its meeting on Thursday, approved the formation of an independent investigation service for the Bangladesh Police.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting at his office, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters at a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the afternoon.

“The Advisory Council has decided to establish an independent investigation service for the police to ensure that inquiries are carried out free from political or any other external influence,” he said.

The council also instructed the creation of a separate commission to address internal complaints within the police force. “The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will work to implement both decisions without delay,” Alam added.

Advisers Asif Nazrul and Adilur Rahman Khan, along with the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on Home Affairs Khoda Box Chowdhury, will be directly involved in the process, he said.

Highlighting another key agenda item, the press secretary noted that the meeting placed strong emphasis on strengthening local government institutions. “The Chief Adviser repeatedly stressed that local government bodies must be further empowered. He directed measures to enable Union Parishads, Upazila Parishads, Zila Parishads, municipalities, and city corporations to generate and manage their own funds transparently.”

On the health sector, Alam said, “Some medical colleges are suffering from a shortage of qualified teachers. Initiatives will therefore be taken to engage retired teachers as consultants or in other roles to improve the quality of education.”

The meeting also reviewed the situation of Bangladeshis in Nepal. “They are safe and under the care of the Bangladesh Embassy. Arrangements have already been made to bring the national football team home on a special Bangladesh Air Force flight,” Alam confirmed.

Summing up the day’s outcomes, he said, “Every decision taken at today’s meeting will contribute to strengthening Bangladesh’s economy, governance, and international standing.”

Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder was also present at the briefing.
