Government Has Not Initiated Any Talks with UN on ‘Humanitarian Corridor’: Alam

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam clarified today that the interim government has not engaged in any discussions with the United Nations or any other entity regarding the so-called ‘humanitarian corridor’. Speaking to BSS in response to reports about a proposed UN humanitarian corridor to Myanmar’s Rakhine State via Cox’s Bazar, Alam firmly stated, “We want to make it categorically clear that the government has not discussed the matter with the UN or any other party.”
He noted that if the UN initiates a humanitarian support mission to Rakhine, Bangladesh is willing to provide logistical assistance. Citing the UNDP, he acknowledged that Rakhine is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis. Alam highlighted Bangladesh's history of extending aid during emergencies, pointing to recent assistance provided to Myanmar following a devastating earthquake.
Expressing concern over the potential for further displacement from Rakhine into Bangladesh, Alam emphasized that the country is already under strain. He said the government believes UN-led aid efforts could help stabilize Rakhine and encourage the return of refugees.
Given the current situation, Alam stated that delivering aid through Bangladesh appears to be the only practical option. He reiterated that while Bangladesh is open to facilitating the transport of aid, no decision has been finalized, and discussions with relevant stakeholders are ongoing.
Addressing speculation about the involvement of a major power in the process, Alam dismissed such claims as “pure and unadulterated propaganda,” and condemned the continued spread of misinformation targeting Bangladesh.
