China pledges support to help Bangladesh mitigate impact of US tariffs
Ambassador Yao Wen says China-Bangladesh-Pakistan cooperation will build on economic progress and is focused on safeguarding the sovereignty of South Asian nations.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen on Tuesday said China is ready to provide necessary support to Bangladesh to counter the adverse effects of additional US tariffs, calling them part of Washington’s “coercion tactics.”
Speaking at a discussion organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club, Yao criticised the tariff hikes—particularly US President Donald Trump’s planned 35% reciprocal tariff—as violations of WTO rules. He warned such measures could deepen global economic instability.
Later Tuesday night, a Bangladeshi delegation is scheduled to hold final negotiations with the US, seeking to reduce the proposed tariff to a maximum of 20%.
Yao also expressed China’s interest in advancing a trilateral cooperation framework with Bangladesh and Pakistan, aimed at safeguarding the sovereignty of South Asian nations while promoting economic growth. He emphasised that the initiative is not directed against any third country.
“No South Asian country has officially raised objections,” Yao noted, suggesting that apprehensions are largely limited to Indian media and strategic circles concerned about regional influence.
The ambassador reiterated Beijing’s commitment to working with Bangladesh and Myanmar on the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, although he acknowledged that instability in Myanmar’s Rakhine state remains a major obstacle to progress.
