Bangladesh has appointed Ariful Islam as its next ambassador to the United States
The position has been vacant for several months following the appointment of former ambassador Asad Alam Siam as Foreign Secretary.

Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam, currently serving as Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Geneva, has been appointed as the country’s next Ambassador to the United States.
The ambassadorial post in Washington DC had been vacant for several months after his predecessor, Asad Alam Siam, was made Foreign Secretary.
A senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to UNB on Wednesday that Ambassador Tareq has already moved from Geneva to Washington DC to take up his new assignment.
Tareq previously served as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka before being appointed in June 2024 as the country’s envoy to the UN Offices in Geneva, succeeding Ambassador Mohammad Sufiur Rahman.
A career diplomat from the 17th batch of the BCS (Foreign Affairs) cadre, he joined the service in 1998. Prior to his Geneva posting in November 2020, he worked as Deputy Permanent Representative at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
Earlier in his career, he had another tenure at the New York mission (2005–2009), first as First Secretary and later as Counsellor. He also served as Counsellor at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, India (2009–2012).
At the Foreign Ministry headquarters, he held key positions including Director General of the South Asia Wing, as well as Director in the South Asia Wing, Foreign Minister’s Office, Personnel Wing, and the Foreign Secretary’s Office.
Ambassador Tareq holds a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and Trade from Monash University, Australia, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
