Police have arrested eight people on suspicion of involvement in the violent clash between Chittagong University (CU) students and villagers near the campus late Saturday and Sunday.

Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahmud Kaiser Hossain confirmed the arrests on Wednesday.

The detainees were produced before the court, where police sought a 10-day remand for each of them, the officer said, adding that drives are underway to apprehend others accused in the case.

On Tuesday, CU’s security chief Abdur Rahim filed a case against 1,095 individuals, including members of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations.

According to the case statement, the incident stemmed from an altercation between a female student and a gatekeeper when she tried to enter her rented apartment near the campus around 11:30pm. The gatekeeper resisted, saying it was too late at night.

The dispute escalated as more CU students gathered, prompting villagers from nearby Jobra to intervene and attack the students with sharp local weapons.

Police attempted to control the situation but failed, while the mob went on a rampage, causing property damage estimated at Tk 4.35 lakh, the case statement said.
