Chief Prosecutor to Ask Home Ministry to Seize Hasina’s Assets
A letter will be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking enforcement of the court order to confiscate assets belonging to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both sentenced to death in a crimes against humanity case linked to the July 2024 mass uprising.
Md Aminul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, told BSS that he would send the letter to the home ministry on Tuesday to ensure implementation of the confiscation order against Hasina and Kamal.
“We will also send letters to the Ministry of Home Affairs in due course to ensure the implementation of other tribunal verdicts that order the confiscation of assets belonging to other individuals,” he said.
In the letter addressed to the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the chief prosecutor noted that on 17 November 2025, International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced fugitive accused Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity. The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of all her assets, directing that the proceeds be distributed as compensation to the families of those killed during the July 2024 uprising and other victims.
The tribunal had also instructed the home ministry to take necessary steps to enforce the confiscation order.
The letter warned that any delay in bringing the fugitive convict's movable and immovable properties under government control could allow her to use, sell or transfer the assets, potentially undermining the tribunal's order.
The ministry has therefore been urgently requested to identify and compile a comprehensive list of all her movable and immovable assets, bring them under state control and take necessary measures to distribute the proceeds in accordance with the tribunal's directives as compensation for the victims and the families of those killed during the July 2024 uprising.
Confiscation of assets belonging to Hasina and Kamal
International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 mass uprising.
In the same verdict, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as a state witness, was sentenced to five years in prison.
The landmark verdict, delivered on 17 November 2025 by a three-member tribunal panel led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, also ordered the confiscation of assets belonging to Hasina and Kamal. The proceeds are to be used to compensate the families of those killed and people injured during the uprising.
Half of the assets of Quader and four others ordered confiscated
In a separate crimes against humanity case linked to the 2024 mass uprising, the International Crimes Tribunal on 15 September sentenced seven individuals, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death.
The other six convicts are AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Joint General Secretary of the Awami League; former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat; banned Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash; Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil; banned Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain; and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
All seven convicts remain at large.
In the verdict, delivered by a three-member panel of International Crimes Tribunal-2 led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, the tribunal ordered the confiscation of 50 per cent of the movable and immovable assets belonging to Obaidul Quader, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil.
The tribunal directed that proceeds from the sale of the confiscated assets be used to provide appropriate compensation to those killed or injured during the July uprising, or their families, through the July Foundation or another statutory body.
