Asif Mahmud states that all men who are not implicated in killings or crimes are eligible to contest in elections.

LGRD Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain stated today that Awami League members not involved in crimes, killings, or offenses can seek forgiveness and re-enter politics. He emphasized that there would be no obstruction for anyone wanting to contest elections, except for those accused of mass killings, who will be barred from participating under any circumstances.
Asif Mahmud made these comments after the sixth session on the final day of the DC Conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.
He also mentioned that no final decision has been made regarding local government elections before the national election, but an agreement will be reached soon. "Officials with additional responsibilities in various local government institutions frequently urge us to either appoint full-time administrators or conduct elections," he said.
While the government has not finalized a decision, he stated that a resolution is expected soon, either through elections or the appointment of administrators to oversee local government institutions.
The adviser also addressed challenges in local government institutions, pointing out that the absence of elected representatives has become an ongoing issue. "Divisional commissioners are responsible for some city corporations, and deputy commissioners are managing zila parishads," he explained. He added that managing multiple responsibilities by a single officer can hinder efficiency.
Asif Mahmud suggested that holding local government elections before the national election could be advantageous, as local bodies play a key role in organizing a successful national election.
However, he clarified that the final decision will come from the government after discussions with other political parties, and his personal opinion does not determine the outcome.
