Trump threatens to cut $9 billion in Harvard funding over 'anti-Semitism' concerns.

The U.S. government announced a review of $9 billion in funding for Harvard University over allegations of anti-Semitism on campus, following recent cuts to Columbia University's funding amid intense pro-Palestinian student protests.

Former President Donald Trump has taken strong action against prestigious universities that experienced protests over Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, revoking federal funds and directing immigration authorities to deport foreign student demonstrators, including those with green cards.

Officials will examine $255.6 million in contracts between Harvard and the federal government, along with $8.7 billion in multi-year grant commitments, according to a statement from the General Services Administration.

Critics argue that the Trump administration's actions are punitive and could stifle free speech, while supporters claim they are necessary to restore order on campuses and ensure the safety of Jewish students.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated, "Harvard's failure to protect students from anti-Semitic discrimination—while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry—has put its reputation at serious risk."

Harvard President Alan Garner responded, warning that cutting funding would disrupt life-saving research and hinder scientific innovation. He defended the university's efforts to combat anti-Semitism, citing strengthened policies and disciplinary measures implemented over the past 15 months.

Trump has also targeted Columbia University, initially placing $400 million in funding under review, detaining a graduate student linked to the protests for deportation, and pursuing further arrests. Columbia later agreed to a set of concessions, including stricter definitions of anti-Semitism, increased oversight of protests, and departmental reviews, though it stopped short of fully complying with the administration's demands.

Monday’s official statement confirmed that Columbia’s agreement to nine preconditions led to further negotiations regarding the potential reinstatement of its revoked federal funds.
