Trump Teases Iran Nuclear Talks Announcement Within 2 Days

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump characterized the latest round of nuclear negotiations with Iran as “very, very good,” expressing optimism about a potential breakthrough. “I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good,” he told reporters while speaking on the tarmac at Morristown airport before boarding Air Force One.

Trump praised what he called “real progress, serious progress” in the fifth round of talks, which concluded in Rome on Friday. Mediated by Oman, these negotiations—ongoing since April—mark the highest-level engagement between Washington and Tehran since the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement during Trump’s first term.

Since his return to office, Trump has renewed his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran, signaling openness to diplomacy while maintaining the threat of military action. Iran, meanwhile, is pushing for a new deal that would alleviate crippling economic sanctions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is leading Tehran’s negotiating team, tempered expectations by describing the negotiations as too complex to resolve quickly. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi also noted on social media that while the talks showed “some but not conclusive progress,” he hoped remaining issues would be clarified in the coming days.

Trump reiterated his optimism, saying, “I think we could have some good news on the Iran front,” and hinted that an announcement could come within the next two days.

These discussions are taking place ahead of a June meeting of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will assess Iran’s nuclear activities. The timeline is also significant as the 2015 nuclear deal nears its October expiration. That agreement, which Iran insists it honored, provided sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, until the U.S. unilaterally withdrew in 2018. Iran responded by gradually ramping up its nuclear activities and is now enriching uranium to 60 percent purity—well beyond the deal’s 3.67 percent limit but still short of weapons-grade levels.
