Supreme Court Acquits Jamaat Leader ATM Azharul Islam of Liberation War Crimes

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has overturned its previous verdict that upheld the conviction and death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader AKM Azharul Islam, originally handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal in a crimes against humanity case. The court also ordered Azharul’s immediate release from prison, provided he is not implicated in any other case.
A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, delivered the ruling. According to Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Mohammed Belayet Hossain, who was present during the announcement, this marks the first instance in which the Appellate Division has reversed its own decision affirming a conviction and death sentence issued by the tribunal in such cases.
Earlier, on February 27, the court granted Azharul permission to file a new appeal challenging his death sentence.
In response to the development, Jamaat-e-Islami has scheduled an emergency press conference at 11:30am today at the Muktijoddha Hall of the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail.
