Tarique calls on government to intensify pressure on Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday urged the interim government to step up diplomatic initiatives and exert greater pressure on Myanmar to ensure the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh to escape persecution.
In a Facebook post marking World Refugee Day, Tarique described the Rohingya crisis as one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies, according to a UNB report.
“We call upon the interim government to strengthen diplomatic engagement and maintain sustained pressure on Myanmar for the safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingyas,” he stated.
He also appealed to the international community to hold all parties accountable, emphasizing that the crisis remains unresolved.
Expressing solidarity with displaced people worldwide, Tarique noted that for Bangladesh, the refugee issue is not only a global concern but a daily reality. He highlighted that the country currently shelters over 1.4 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar, reflecting Bangladesh’s ongoing humanitarian commitment.
However, he warned that the crisis continues to escalate, placing an increasingly unsustainable burden on Bangladesh.
“Let us renew our pledge to build peaceful and just systems that ensure no refugee is left behind in their journey back home,” he added.
World Refugee Day, observed globally on June 20, recognizes the strength and resilience of refugees while raising awareness of their struggles and rights.
