Rampura Crimes Against Humanity: Ex-DMP Commissioner Habibur, Two Others Sentenced to Death
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday sentenced three former police officials, including ex-Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death for crimes against humanity committed in Rampura during the July Mass Uprising, in which two people were killed and two others injured.
The verdict was delivered at 12:25pm by a three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The other members of the bench were Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The three condemned to death are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam, and former Officer-in-Charge of Rampura Police Station Md Mashiur Rahman.
The tribunal also sentenced former Rampura Police Station Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment, while former Assistant Sub-Inspector Chanchal Chandra Sarkar—the only accused currently in custody—was handed a 20-year prison term.
According to the prosecution, on July 19, 2024, Amir Hossain climbed onto an under-construction building on Banasree-Meradia Road in Rampura while trying to flee police gunfire during the student-led mass movement. Prosecutors alleged that police chased him and, as he clung to steel rods along the roof's edge, an officer fired six rounds at him, leaving him critically injured.
Later that day, Nadim and Maya Islam were killed in police firing in the Banasree area. Of the five convicted individuals, four remain absconding.
