Prime Minister’s China Visit
Bangladesh and China are expected to sign between 15 and 17 bilateral instruments during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s upcoming visit to the East Asian nation.
The instruments are likely to include 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), two agreements, one action plan, and one protocol, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam told reporters at a media briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.
He said discussions on the Teesta project are also expected to take place during the visit.
The Foreign Secretary noted that the delegations accompanying the Prime Minister to Malaysia and China have been kept relatively small, with 27 and 28 members respectively.
“We tried to keep it at a logical level,” he said.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s two-nation tour to Malaysia and China will begin on Sunday and is aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s economic partnerships, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing regional connectivity.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to depart for Kuala Lumpur on Sunday afternoon at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He will travel to China from Malaysia on Monday afternoon at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The visit will mark Tarique Rahman’s first overseas trip since assuming office in February this year.
During his stay in China, the Prime Minister will attend the World Economic Forum’s 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, also known as the Summer Davos Forum, which will be held in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian from June 23 to 25.
According to the organisers, more than 1,700 participants from over 90 countries and regions are expected to attend the event. The forum, themed “Innovating at Scale”, will focus on issues such as China’s economic trajectory and the translation of technological innovation into tangible economic gains.
In addition to his bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on June 25, Prime Minister Rahman is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 26.
He is expected to return to Bangladesh on Friday night.
The Malaysia leg of the tour will focus on expanding trade, labour market cooperation, and investment opportunities, while the China visit is expected to reinforce Bangladesh’s engagement in infrastructure, technology, and development cooperation initiatives.
