RAB DG: No Tolerance for Mob Violence or Disrupting Public Order

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General and Additional Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidur Rahman on Saturday said that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands or disrupt public order through mob violence.

“Regardless of the perpetrators' identity or political affiliation, they will be brought to justice and face stern punishment,” he said during a press briefing at the RAB media centre in the capital.

Speaking about the recent killing of a scrap trader in Old Dhaka, he said, “We are conducting a shadow investigation alongside the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), which is also investigating the incident.”

He said law enforcement agencies are on high alert to swiftly arrest anyone involved in criminal activities.

“In recent months, RAB has detained numerous individuals linked to various crimes. Prompt actions are being taken to ensure they are held accountable. So far, around 20 people involved in mob violence have been apprehended,” he added.

Referring to the July 2 incident in Patgram, Lalmonirhat—where a mob attacked police officers and freed detainees—he said three suspects were arrested within 48 hours.

He also highlighted the July 3 triple murder in Muradnagar, Cumilla, where a woman and her two children were killed by a mob. RAB arrested six individuals in connection with the case.

Addressing a bomb hoax at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Saturday, he said a woman had called authorities warning of a bomb on a Dhaka-Kathmandu flight, prompting a security sweep that found nothing.

Subsequently, RAB and the Army launched a joint operation in Uttara and detained three individuals: Emon, his wife Tahmina, and Imran.

“Initial findings suggest that Emon was flying to Kathmandu with his extramarital partner. His wife, unable to prevent him from leaving, made the false bomb threat on a friend’s suggestion,” he said.

The RAB DG warned that such hoax calls have occurred before and that anyone involved in such deceitful acts would be brought to justice.

“Our operations against criminal elements will continue. RAB remains committed to arresting offenders and ensuring they are held accountable,” he said.
