Bangladesh, US Reach Further Consensus in Final Day of Trade Talks; Discussions to Continue
Bangladesh and the United States reached consensus on several additional issues on the third and final day of the second round of trade negotiations held in Washington, DC, on Friday.
However, some matters remain unresolved. Both sides agreed to continue inter-ministerial consultations to narrow the gaps.
Following these internal discussions, representatives of the two countries are expected to reconvene for further talks, either virtually or in person. According to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s Office, the date and format of the next meeting will be confirmed soon.
The Bangladesh delegation—comprising Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin, Commerce Secretary, and Additional Secretary—is set to return home today (July 12). A return visit to Washington, DC, remains an option if required.
Reflecting on the outcomes of the three-day negotiations, Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin and National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman expressed optimism about reaching a constructive outcome within the expected timeline.
Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin led the Bangladeshi delegation in Washington, while National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on ICT and Telecommunications Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb joined virtually from Dhaka.
Senior government officials and subject-matter experts also participated remotely.
The three-day negotiations were coordinated by the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, DC.
