Govt Seriously Weighing Ban on AL: CA Press Wing

The interim government has taken serious note of growing calls from political parties, civil society groups, and the general public to impose a ban on the Bangladesh Awami League (AL), citing its authoritarian conduct and alleged involvement in terrorist activities that have led to widespread human rights abuses.
"The party has consistently refused to cooperate with ongoing investigations and instead is openly working to destabilise the country," read a statement issued today by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
The government is currently reviewing the demand and will consult with political stakeholders before reaching a final decision, the statement added.
"In this context, the government is also considering the findings of a UN report that documents terrorist acts committed by AL leaders and supporters during the July uprising. Until a decision is reached, all citizens are urged to remain patient," it stated.
The statement further noted that, responding to public outcry, the government has already banned the AL’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), under the Anti-Terrorism Act, citing its role in violence and terrorist activity.
Moreover, the government intends to amend the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act to enable the prosecution of organisations and political parties implicated in crimes against humanity.
The statement also acknowledged public frustration over the departure of former President Abdul Hamid—who held office under the previous administration and faces charges related to an attack on protesters during the July–August mass uprising.
"The government remains committed to ensuring accountability for all individuals connected to this incident," it concluded.
