Four World Cup games finish in draws, equalling 68-year-old milestone
A rare World Cup record was matched on 15 June as all four matches played that day ended in draws, marking only the second time such an outcome has occurred in the tournament's history.
According to The Athletic, the only previous occasion was on 15 June 1958, when four World Cup fixtures on the same day also finished level. Remarkably, the feat was repeated exactly 68 years later on the same date.
Among the day's standout results was Spain's goalless draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde. The tournament favourites were frustrated by a resolute defensive performance from the island nation, which successfully kept the Spanish attack at bay.
In another match, Egypt took the lead against Belgium in the 20th minute but were pegged back by an own goal in the 66th minute as the contest ended 1-1. Saudi Arabia also claimed a 1-1 draw against former champions Uruguay after taking the lead in the 41st minute, before Maximiliano Araujo struck in the 80th minute to earn Uruguay a share of the points.
Meanwhile, Iran showed resilience to twice come from behind and secure a 2-2 draw with New Zealand. Despite being ranked 65 places higher than their opponents, the Iranians were forced to fight back on both occasions.
The quartet of drawn matches ensured a place in World Cup history, equalling a record that had stood unchallenged since 1958.
