Envoy calls for deeper cooperation between Algeria and Bangladesh
Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani on Tuesday called for deeper cooperation between Algeria and Bangladesh in areas including trade, education, technology, and renewable energy, highlighting the longstanding ties between the two countries during a commemorative event in Dhaka.
The Algerian embassy organised the ceremony to mark the “Demonstrations of December 11, 1960,” honouring those who lost their lives in the anti-colonial uprising against French rule.
The event opened with the hoisting of Algeria’s national flag, followed by a minute of silence in tribute to the martyrs.
In his address, Ambassador Saidani underscored the historic importance of the 1960 protests, recalling how Algerians defiantly rose up during French President Charles de Gaulle’s visit to demand full independence rather than partial sovereignty. He noted that the violent crackdown only strengthened national unity and drew international attention to Algeria’s struggle.
He said the resistance ultimately secured Algeria’s recognised right to self-determination at the United Nations, paving the way for independence. Today, he added, Algeria remains committed to progress driven by innovation, youth engagement, and a diversified economy.
Drawing parallels between the experiences of Algeria and Bangladesh, the envoy highlighted the two nations’ shared histories of sacrifice, dignity, and the pursuit of self-determination.
“Algeria understands the value of freedom because its people paid its price… Both our histories are marked by resistance to oppression, the quest for dignity, and the belief that nations must chart their own destiny,” he said.
Ambassador Saidani also noted Algeria’s interest in broadening cooperation with Bangladesh in trade, education, technology, renewable energy, cultural exchange, and peace diplomacy.
The programme concluded with a documentary screening on the December 11, 1960 demonstrations. Members of civil society, Bangladesh Scouts, business leaders, and journalists were present at the event.
