Around 37,000 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed to maintain security ahead of the national elections.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has rolled out extensive security arrangements ahead of the 13th National Parliament Election and the Referendum, deploying more than 37,000 personnel nationwide to help ensure a peaceful, free and fair polling process.

The information was shared by BGB Dhaka Sector Commander Colonel SM Abul Ehsan during a media briefing at the Mirpur National Swimming Complex on Sunday morning, following his inspection of several election base camps in the capital.

He said BGB has been deployed in 489 of the country’s 495 upazilas, with the force operating independently in 61 border upazilas. To maintain heightened vigilance, BGB personnel will carry out both mobile and static duties across all 300 parliamentary constituencies.

“Each upazila will have between two and four platoons on duty. At the same time, the country’s entire 4,427-kilometre border will remain under strict surveillance throughout the election period,” Colonel Ehsan said.

Under the Dhaka Sector, 134 platoons will be stationed at 42 temporary base camps, covering 51 constituencies across nine districts and four city corporations. The deployments will be handled by Dhaka Battalions 5 and 26, Narayanganj Battalion 62, and Gazipur Battalion 63.

To deal with emergencies, BGB’s Rapid Action Team (RAT), Quick Response Force (QRF) and Helicopter Unit will remain on standby. A specialised K-9 Dog Squad will also be deployed to conduct targeted search operations and further bolster security.

BGB authorities said personnel have undergone special election-focused training to ensure professional and impartial conduct. Modern equipment, including body-worn cameras, night-vision devices, metal detectors, armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and advanced communication systems, will be used to enhance transparency, accountability and operational effectiveness.

A dedicated monitoring cell has been set up at battalion and sector headquarters to supervise the election situation around the clock. On polling day, BGB members will patrol key areas, establish checkpoints, and search vehicles and suspicious individuals to prevent unrest or sabotage.

Reaffirming its political neutrality, BGB said it will strictly follow directives from the government and the Election Commission to ensure a level playing field for all parties and candidates.

Expressing confidence, BGB officials said they expect the 13th National Parliament Election to be held in a peaceful and festive atmosphere through the combined efforts of the government, the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies and the public.
