Yunus urges Argentina to strengthen 'footballing ties' to enhance cooperation
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today called on Argentina to deepen the emotional "footballing ties" shared with Bangladesh as a foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including trade.
Highlighting the unwavering support of the Bangladeshi people for the Argentina football team, Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus stated, "We share an emotional connection. We can build on that. The foundation is already there, and we can extend it to other areas."
According to the Chief Adviser's press wing, Professor Yunus encouraged Argentina's ambassador to explore opportunities for setting up ventures in cotton-related trade and investment, either through full ownership or joint ventures. He also suggested exploring potential energy cooperation.
Ambassador Cesa pointed out that Argentina and Bangladesh have several untapped areas of collaboration with significant potential for mutual benefit. He also proposed the establishment of a Bangladeshi Embassy in Buenos Aires to strengthen ties further.
"The positive sentiment we share can be leveraged for the benefit of both countries," he remarked.
The ambassador highlighted Argentina’s current trade surplus of nearly $700 million with Bangladesh, expressing a desire to balance it by increasing imports from Bangladesh. Argentina exports items such as soybeans, wheat, corn, and raw cotton to Bangladesh, while importing around $22 million worth of garments annually.
He emphasized the need for closer collaboration in areas such as cotton trade, joint investments, pharmaceuticals, textiles, football (including women's football), microcredit, trade delegations, LNG, and rice disease management, according to the press wing.
Ambassador Cesa also commended Bangladesh for signing the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) on August 29, 2024, a cause strongly advocated by Argentina. Additionally, he sought Bangladesh’s assistance in introducing microfinance initiatives in Argentina.
The meeting was attended by Lamiya Morshed, principal coordinator (SDG Affairs), along with officials from the Chief Adviser's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
