BGB detains Rohingya with drugs, firearm in Cox's Bazar
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested a Rohingya man found carrying drugs and a firearm during a raid along the Naf River in Cox’s Bazar’s border area.
The BGB identified the detainee, Md Nur Rashid, 25, as a “drug trafficker,” according to a report by bdnews24.com. He was captured from the Anwar Project area of the Naf River in Teknaf Upazila’s Hnila Union on Tuesday, said Lt Col Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of BGB Teknaf-2 Battalion.
Nur Rashid, son of the late Md Salimullah, is a resident of the Teknaf Leda Rohingya camp. Acting on intelligence about a large drug shipment, the BGB team conducted the late-night raid. They spotted three suspicious individuals near the riverbank crossing the border, but when ordered to stop, two escaped by swimming towards Myanmar. The third, Nur Rashid, was detained on the vessel.
During a search, the BGB recovered a plastic bag containing 100,000 yaba tablets, a firearm, and a bullet. Nur Rashid admitted his involvement in drug trafficking along the Naf border, according to Lt Col Mohiuddin. He is also reported to be a member of the Rohingya camp-based robbery gang “Abul Kalam Bahini” and has previous accusations of drug smuggling and other criminal activities.
A case has been filed with the Teknaf Police Station, and Nur has been handed over to police custody, confirmed the BGB officer.
