Akhtar Hossain plans to launch a new political party by February
Akhtar Hossain, Member-Secretary of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, announced that a new political party will be launched in the country by February.
Speaking at separate programs in Kawnia upazila and Rangpur Carmichael College on Thursday, Akhtar revealed, “The anti-discrimination student movement, which led the July uprising, and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee will jointly introduce a centrist political party.”
During the events, Akhtar distributed 1,000 blankets to the cold-stricken poor at Kawnia Girls' High School in the morning and later engaged with the public at Kawnia Bazar. In the afternoon, he addressed students from Pirgachha and Kawnia upazilas studying at Rangpur Carmichael College and Begum Rokeya University.
He further disclosed that 200 Thana committees for the proposed party have already been formed nationwide. “By January, this number will exceed 400. In February, we’ll officially announce the party after finalizing its name,” Akhtar said.
He emphasized that the party would uphold a balanced political ideology, rejecting both Islamophobia and any form of religious extremism. “We aim to establish a moderate political practice in Bangladesh,” he stated.
Akhtar criticized attempts to bring the Awami League back into power, claiming such efforts are influenced by ties with Delhi. “The people of Bangladesh will resist with full force against those pushing for Awami League’s return to politics,” he declared.
He also called for a new constitution, arguing that the current one enables authoritarianism. “The existing constitution has provisions that allow any Prime Minister to become a dictator like Hasina. A new constitution is needed to ensure accountability for whoever assumes office,” Akhtar said.
Highlighting widespread corruption, he alleged that funds siphoned off during the Padma Bridge construction could have financed 78 similar bridges. He vowed to curb money laundering and ensure transparency in governance.
Akhtar also shared plans to implement the Teesta Master Plan, establish an economic zone along the Teesta River between Kawnia and Pirgachha upazilas, and develop these areas into model upazilas.
The events were attended by Rangpur divisional, district, and Kawnia upazila-level leaders of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, including Alamgir Hossain, Arif Hossain, Rezwan Hossain, Suman Ahmed, and others.
