Bangladesh has significant potential for the growth of agro-based tourism, which can create jobs, support local businesses, reduce poverty, and contribute to the development of rural communities, stated Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) on Monday.

During a workshop held at the BTB Conference Room, the CEO emphasized that agro-tourism could enhance education, skills, and living standards in rural areas. It can also promote sustainable farming practices and help mitigate the environmental impact of tourism in the country.

Agro-tourism, by showcasing the nation's agricultural diversity, cultural traditions, and local products, plays a key role in promoting the country’s culture, he added.

The Bangladesh Tourism Board, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Flower Society, organized the workshop under the theme “Workshop on Introducing Agro-Tourism in Bangladesh,” with support from PUM Netherlands, a Netherlands-based organization.

Harro Boekhold, a well-known agri-tourism expert from PUM Netherlands, shared insights on expanding agro-based tourism in Bangladesh. He explained that agro-tourism can be developed with various agricultural products, including fruits, flowers, grains, as well as fisheries and livestock farms.

"Agro-tourism involves agricultural activities that attract visitors to farms, where they can meet farmers and learn about food production. Visitors will also have the opportunity to engage actively in farming and rural life," Harro said.

He added that agro-tourism would provide additional income for families in rural areas, diversify their earnings, create opportunities, and help urban residents gain a better understanding of farming and rural life.

The workshop was attended by BTB Director (Marketing, Planning & Public Relations) Saleha Binte Siraj, Director (Marketing and Branding) Mohibul Islam, and officials from various government and non-government organizations.
