Trump Delays Major Iran Escalation Following Pentagon Missile Shortage Warning

US President Donald Trump has reportedly put plans for a major escalation of military action against Iran on hold after senior Pentagon officials warned that a wider conflict could significantly deplete the United States' stockpile of Patriot interceptor missiles and other key air defence systems.

According to officials familiar with internal deliberations, concerns over dwindling interceptor missile inventories heavily influenced Trump's decision following a high-level meeting with senior advisers and Cabinet members on Friday.

The administration also considered the potential consequences of a broader regional conflict, including its impact on relations with Gulf allies, the global economy, energy markets and a possible refugee crisis.

Sources said only a small group of Trump's closest advisers supported expanding military operations against Iran, while most senior officials urged restraint.

Patriot missile concerns

The Pentagon's limited supply of Patriot interceptor missiles emerged as a key issue during the discussions.

US military bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have come under repeated Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in recent weeks.

A senior US official said three American soldiers were killed in Jordan last Friday after an Iranian ballistic missile breached US air defences during a large-scale attack.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine reportedly told Trump that while a broader military campaign was feasible, it would significantly reduce the number of Patriot interceptors available to US Central Command, which oversees operations across the Middle East.

Gen. Caine's office declined to comment on the discussions.

Pentagon assessments and congressional officials estimate that the United States had launched more than 1,200 Patriot interceptor missiles by late April. Costing more than $4 million each, the missiles are in increasingly short supply, with officials warning that inventories have reached critically low levels.

Military planners cautioned that a large-scale US offensive could trigger stronger Iranian retaliation against American forces and regional allies, further straining already limited air defence capabilities.

Trump delays broader offensive

Although Trump has publicly maintained that military action remains an option, he ultimately chose to postpone a wider offensive.

"We're locked and loaded," Trump told reporters on Friday. "We're ready to go, but we're talking to them, so maybe there will be, maybe there won't be a tipping point."

A day earlier, Trump told Axios he was considering "a massive attack" that would be "bigger than ever before," adding that a decision would be made soon.

Ahead of any potential escalation, the Pentagon had reinforced its military presence across the Middle East with additional personnel, weapons and logistical support.

Military officials said commanders had prepared initial plans targeting Iranian coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile launchers, fast attack boats and other military assets linked to attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Potential strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear-related sites, including the facility known as Pickaxe Mountain, were also reportedly being considered.

The US military has already conducted strikes on several railway bridges in Iran, arguing they are used to transport military equipment and supplies to the country's southern coast and the Strait of Hormuz, despite their civilian use.

By Friday evening, however, Trump had reportedly suspended plans for a broader military campaign after Pentagon assessments concluded that the potential drain on US air defence capabilities could outweigh the expected military benefits.
