Acting President Hafiz Uddin Honors Liberation War Martyrs

Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Sunday paid tribute to the martyrs of Bangladesh's Liberation War by laying a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar.

He placed the wreath at around 11:40am and observed a minute of silence in honour of the fallen heroes. A contingent of the Armed Forces presented him with a guard of honour, after which he signed the visitors' book.

Later in the day, the acting President is scheduled to pay homage to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia by laying wreaths at their graves at the Zia Mausoleum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.

After completing the tribute programmes, he will proceed to Bangabhaban to perform the routine official duties of the head of state.

Hafiz Uddin assumed the role of acting President on Friday, in line with constitutional provisions, after President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office.

Shahabuddin submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad under Article 50(3) of the Constitution, citing health reasons.
