Trump Calls Russian Strike on Ukraine 'A Horrible Thing'
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday condemned a Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy that killed at least 34 people, calling it "a horrible thing."
“I think it was terrible. I was told it was a mistake. But it’s a horrible thing. The entire war is a horrible thing,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One during his return to Washington.
Pressed to clarify what he meant by “a mistake,” Trump replied, “They made a mistake… you’re going to have to ask them,” without specifying who he was referring to.
Earlier in the day, the National Security Council described the strike as “a clear and stark reminder of why President Donald Trump’s efforts to bring an end to this terrible war are so critical.”
Neither Trump nor the White House directly blamed Moscow for the attack, though Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended condolences to the “victims of today’s horrifying Russian missile attack on Sumy.”
The incident occurred just two days after U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to advance Trump’s initiative to end the war.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Trump to visit Ukraine to witness firsthand the destruction caused by Russia’s invasion.
“Before making any decisions or entering negotiations, please come and see the people — civilians, soldiers, hospitals, churches, children — destroyed or killed,” Zelensky said in an interview aired on CBS.
