Chief Adviser Prof Yunus Optimistic About Transforming Bangladesh’s Health Sector, Calls for Collective Effort

On Monday, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed hope for significant changes in Bangladesh's health sector through the collective efforts of all healthcare providers. Speaking at a conference of district civil surgeons at Shapla Hall, Prof Yunus emphasized that with increased attention and dedication, a 25% improvement could be achieved within the current system.

"This is a major opportunity for those involved in health services. A little more dedication from each of you can make a huge difference," he stated.

Prof Yunus reassured the audience that the health sector’s challenges would be addressed but stressed the need for better effort from everyone involved, urging a shift in mindset. "Why can’t we do this? If we have that attitude, change is possible," he added.

Referring to the moment as a "window of opportunity," Prof Yunus urged health professionals to seize the moment as global attention is on Bangladesh. He also mentioned the Health Sector Reform Commission’s report, which includes key recommendations for systemic improvements.

Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need for discipline and accountability in hospitals, which she noted were lacking in some cases during surprise visits. She called for improved collaboration between government and non-government entities to advance healthcare delivery.

In line with Prof Yunus’ call for action, Begum announced plans to recruit 7,000 doctors and additional nurses to strengthen the workforce, urging district civil surgeons to identify key challenges at the local level for further resolution.
