The Ministry of Railways has set up an investigation committee to review and verify the specifications for purchasing 30 meter-gauge locomotives for Bangladesh Railway (BR).

The committee will assess the draft specifications prepared by BR, considering factors such as locomotive and component performance, modern technology, energy efficiency, spare parts availability, international standards, and suitability for Bangladesh’s operating environment. It has been tasked with submitting its report to the ministry within 15 working days.

The committee is headed by Dr. Sheik Moinuddin, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry and the Railways Ministry, with BR’s additional director general serving as member secretary. Other members include the BR director general, the managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), and a professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The committee may also co-opt additional members if required.

The purchase of these 30 meter-gauge locomotives is part of the "Conversion of Chattogram-Dohazari Meter-Gauge Railway into Dual-Gauge Railway" project, for which BR has already prepared the draft specifications.
