PCB incurs a loss of Rs 739 crore for hosting its first ICC event in 29 years—Champions Trophy 2025
Pakistan last hosted an ICC event during the 1996 ODI World Cup, which was successful. However, the pursuit of hosting another ICC tournament has resulted in significant financial losses.

PCB Faces Massive Financial Loss Hosting 2025 Champions Trophy
- The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has incurred significant financial losses while hosting its first ICC tournament in 29 years, the 2025 Champions Trophy.
- After securing hosting rights in 2021, PCB invested $100 million (Rs 869 crore) in tournament preparations.
- Challenges arose when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan following advice from the Indian government.
- As a result, five high-revenue matches, including the India vs. Pakistan clash and both semifinals and finals, were relocated to Dubai.
- Out of the 10 matches held in Pakistan, three were washed out due to weather. Additionally, Pakistan was eliminated just six days into the tournament.
Costly Infrastructure Upgrades and Low Returns
- PCB reportedly spent PKR 18 billion (Rs 560 crore) on renovating stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi—50% over budget.
- Another $40 million (Rs 347 crore) was spent on additional preparations.
- In contrast, PCB earned only $6 million (Rs 52 crore) from hosting fees and ticket sales.
- The total financial loss amounted to $85 million (Rs 739 crore).
Cost-Cutting Measures Impact Domestic Players
- To mitigate financial losses, PCB has significantly reduced match fees for domestic players.
- Squad members' match fees have been cut by 90%, while reserve players now receive just 12.5% of their previous earnings.
- Additionally, domestic players, who previously stayed in luxury hotels, are now accommodated in budget lodgings.
